The aim of this paper is to elucidate the lines of Book VII of the Republic in which Socrates and Glaucon investigate the paideutic utility of geometry. Indeed, Plato does not intend to outline some form of good geometry, but he seems to take the point of view of a critical observer, aiming to underline problematic aspects of geometric activities. To support this thesis, this paper is divided into two parts: the first part discusses the main interpretative positions on these lines; the second part intends to unmask the characters that Socrates and Glaucon laugh at in their analysis. This juxtaposition made by Plato is fundamental to understand the importance of the Platonic position regarding geometry.
